The Irish College of Ophthalmologists
(ICO) is an organisation dedicated to the preservation of eye health
and sight and to the provision of total eye care, optical, medical,
and surgical. It was formed
in 1991 when the Irish Ophthalmological Society and the Faculty
of Ophthalmology amalgamated
to form the new body.
At present the College has almost 200 members in Ireland and abroad, and
represents
the interests of both medical and surgical ophthalmologists in Ireland
and Europe. It has representatives on many influential committees of medical
bodies in Ireland, the UK and Europe.
Recently the College has increased its responsibility for training
in ophthalmology and is the recognised body
responsible for ophthalmic training and education in the Republic of
Ireland. Its position
as such is recognised by the Medical Council of Ireland and it is charged with
the responsibility of recommending admission to the Register of
Specialist Doctors in Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Surgery.
Ophthamologists are medical
doctors who are trained to perform comprehensive medical eye
examinations and are professionally and legally qualified to
diagnose and treat eye diseases and conditions. After completing basic medical training and having gained
admission on to the Register of Medical Practitioners future
Ophthalmologists undergo training in optics, ophthalmic medicine and
ophthalmic surgery. Having completed this training and having passed
qualifying examinations these ophthalmologists are eligible for
registration with the Medical Council of Ireland on the Register of
Specialist Doctors in either Ophthalmology (Medical Eye
Specialists)
or Ophthalmic Surgery (Surgical
Eye Specialists).
Only Ophthalmologists
can provide total eye care
